Newsletter Beltane 2008

Hello & warm Beltane wishes to you!

The sun is finally lighting our days & spreading some warmth & good cheer after what’s felt like a very long & damp spring – we hope you are managing to get outside & enjoy the very first signs of the summer to come! We are enjoying the sunshine coming into our shop in the latter part of the afternoon & lighting up the crystals hanging on our big tree in our window, filling the shop with sparkly rainbows…4 o’clock seems like a very magical time of the day to us…

Eryn, our manageress & resident tarot reader, has taken some time off over the next month to get married & spend some time with her family who are coming over to see her all the way from New Zealand! Here in Opal Moon we are very excited at the prospect of dressing up & attending a handfasting, & also meeting up with Eryn’s folks for the first time (we do hope she’s allowed to come back to work after her parents have witnessed her weird & wonderful workplace!!) Congratulations to Eryn & Claire on their tying of the knot, we wish you both many, many happy years together.

Of course Eryn will be unavailable for tarot readings over this period, but we are very lucky to have Scott Hindle reading in her place. Scott, who some of you may have met at our Psychic Evening, is a highly experienced & intuitive reader, with years of experience & knowledge to offer. He will be available for readings on Saturday 3rd, 10th & 17th  May, with Eryn returning for readings on the 24th. Prices & times for readings remain the same.

It’s been lovely to see so many of you in the shop – some familiar faces & some new - & thank you to all who have come along to the events we have held recently. Our last 2 Sunday afternoon talks & our Psychic Evening were complete sell-outs, so thank you for your support. I think everyone enjoyed themselves – apart from learning from & being inspired by our speakers & readers, it’s always nice to be able to get together with like-minded folks & have a good chat on matters spiritual, esoteric or otherwise!

We have lots more planned so fasten your seatbelt as I whizz through what’s coming up!

In May we are also pleased to be travelling around with our wares, & have stalls at Body & Soul Fair Sat 17th & Sun 18th May, Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow. For our first ever Body & Soul Fair we are pleased to say we will be sharing our stall with Tiffany Stephens who will be offering some amazing Quantum Touch Therapy sessions.

Then on Sat 24th May we travel further afield to Edinburgh for the Pagan Federation Conference…. Please be sure to come & say hello if you find yourself at either (or both) of these events – it will be nice to see some familiar faces!

THE CHILL OUT SESSIONS

Starting on Thursday June 5th, we are delighted to say that we will be hosting some wonderful monthly meditation classes in Opal Moon. These will be led by Lyn & Laura of Lunicorn, who I am sure many of you will already have met. I for one am really looking forward to joining with them for what promises to be an evening of pure relaxation. Open to all, from complete meditation novices to the more experienced.

For those who think they can't meditate, they can! The Lunicorns will talk you through an easy, gentle meditation which only requires an hour of your time to be still, contemplate and relax. If you've been put off before by rules which say 'you must sit in the lotus position' or 'you must have a straight back', then fear not - The Lunicorns will blow all of those restrictions away. Come and enjoy!
Tickets cost £6 per person – please get in touch with us at the shop to book your comfy space!

Beltane/May Day

Now we are at the opposite side of the Wheel of the Year from Samhain, another in-between time, when the walls between the worlds are at their thinnest. A powerfully magical time, Beltane celebrates fertility – of the land & of ourselves. This is a perfect time for Faery Magic as the Fay are all around us at the moment. Just be careful what you wish for!! Beltane is a time of energetic growth, a time to strive forward with some exuberance with any plans & projects we are involved in. Be inspired by nature, as all around us we see the plants & trees budding & starting to blossom...

Beltane is a fire festival, celebrating the strengthening of the sun in the sky. It is a time to be outdoors & get together with friends around a big bonfire, & to celebrate life itself!

Traditionally May Day is celebrated by dancing around the maypole, symbol of the God, binding it in red & white ribbons to symbolize the merging of the God & Goddess, or the web of life. A ring of flowers is placed at the top of the maypole to represent the Goddess as Queen of May.

Sacred to Beltane is the Hawthorn tree. This beautiful tree energetically symbolizes fulfillment, healing & happiness. It is a tree of fertility, & bunches of flowering hawthorn were traditionally given to marrying couples to bring them fertility & abundance.

In Midsummer the hawthorn was decorated with flowers & red ribbons, & children danced around them in celebration of the summer & the fruitfulness of the land.

 May Wine

A recipe for Beltane (borrowed with a few adjustments from “Cooking by the Seasons” by Karri Ann Allrich)

Ideal for sipping as you sit around the fire! This lovely concoction merges the 2 colours traditionally linked with Beltane, red & white.

Ingredients:

1 bottle of strawberry or cherry juice

1 bottle of white wine, chilled, such as Chardonnay (alternatively elderflower/berry juice)

1 bottle strawberry or pear juice, chilled

1 pint ripe strawberries, washed & sliced

Sweet woodruff (if available).

 Method:

Using 1 of the bottles of juice, make “ice-cubes” the night before. On the day of your festivities, combine the chilled wine/elderflower juice with the chilled strawberry/pear juice in a large container. Wrap the sweet woodruff in a piece of muslin to make an infusion, & immerse the herb in the juice mixture.

Keep chilled for one hour.

Remove the bag, pour the mixture into a pitcher or serving bowl, & add in the sliced strawberries and juice ice cubes.

As you drink raise a glass to the God & Goddess & give thanks for this fruitful & fun-filled time! Cheers!
